What the Sacred Heart means to me:
As I work on building a heritage collection, I am delighted to introduce the new Sacred Heart Pendant - a tribute to my family, my identity, and my culture.
Being half Mexican and half Black and growing up in a Mexican home, the Sacred Heart was everywhere. Narrating the story behind this pendant compels me to delve into the religious memories of my Mexican ancestors and explore the deep roots of Catholicism, especially in the Latinx identity.
Growing up in my family's Mexican household meant being surrounded by numerous religious symbols. Our Lady of Guadalupe was always watching over us from the many candles in our home and depictions of the Sacred Heart adorned our home, reflecting the religious doctrines of suffering and obedience embraced by many Mexican Catholics. The Sacred Heart, often portrayed with divine light, burning flames, and sharp thorns, holds a special place as a symbol of these beliefs.
Although I have distanced myself from religion over the years, there's a certain nostalgia and transformative meaning that seeps through, a sentiment I believe many post-religious individuals can relate to.
Behind the design of the Sacred Heart:
The symbolism of the Sacred Heart is deeply ingrained in my Mexican culture and I know that many individuals will recognize this symbol. Personally, a Sacred Heart graces my own home next to a doorway, symbolizing love over my household. Seeing it everyday for years now, I knew that I wanted to capture the way it made me feel, in gold. I wanted a simple, radiant heart that appeared formed into a worn coin-like pendant - and there you go, my dream came to life.
Today, I wear the Sacred Heart Necklace as a connection to my Mexican heritage and the upbringing that shaped me. It serves as a reflective piece, allowing me to embrace and express affection for my roots.
Thank you for reading along and learning why this pendant is so special to me!
